Ambanja → Ambilobe transfer

A hundred kilometres of the RN6, and the most improved hundred kilometres in northern Madagascar. The official kilometre posts put Ambanja at PK 467+700 and Ambilobe at PK 568+720 — 101 km exactly, which is a government figure rather than a map estimate.

The road

This section sits inside the 234 km Ambanja-Antsiranana rehabilitation financed by the European Union and the European Investment Bank and built by Colas, launched in September 2021. In January 2026 it was reported 96 per cent complete. For the whole corridor the DIANA governor described the change as going from eight to ten hours of piste to three and a half to four hours; our share of that is about an hour and a half to an hour and three quarters.

Treat anything under an hour and a half as luck rather than as the plan.

Two rivers, and why the internet frightens you about them

Cyclone Gamane took out both bridges on this stretch in March 2024: the Ifasy river at PK 537, roughly 31 km before Ambilobe, and the Mahavavy at the very edge of Ambilobe town.

Neither permanent bridge has been rebuilt yet — they are the outstanding item on the contract. What exists instead works: a rehabilitated ford at Ifasy with a bac standing by when the river runs high, and at Mahavavy a modular bridge opened in December 2025 for vehicles under 20 tonnes with a fully rehabilitated ford beside it since July 2026.

In the dry season this is two brief water crossings and nothing more. In heavy rain it is the whole story, and traffic has been suspended here before — most recently in December 2024 when the Mahavavy ford went under. Your driver checks the state of both before the day starts.

The two ends

Ambanja sits on the north bank of the Sambirano river and is the cocoa capital of Madagascar. Most travellers who start here have just come off the boat from Nosy Be at Ankify, 22 km away, and Ambanja is the first real town on the mainland road.

Ambilobe is a junction and almost nobody goes there for its own sake. It is where the RN6 meets the RN5a east to Vohemar and Sambava, which makes it the hinge of every overland journey in the north. It is also the closest town to Ankarana National Park, whose gate at Mahamasina lies about 35 km further up the RN6.

Zebu on the road are part of driving here. Herds cross the national roads and rest on the warm tarmac, and after dark they are genuinely hard to see even on full beam — which is one reason we do not drive between towns at night. A zebu is worth around 400,000 to 500,000 Ariary, more than a month's wages for most people in this region, so an animal on the road is somebody's livelihood rather than an obstacle. Knowing which stretches carry herds, and at what hour, is exactly the kind of thing a driver who runs these roads every month knows and a rented car does not come with.

Chameleons cross these roads, slowly and without looking, and your driver will stop for them. In much of northern Madagascar it is fady — taboo — to kill or even touch one, and that belief is the reason the big Oustalet's chameleon is still common here when it has thinned out elsewhere. In many villages they are held to carry the spirits of the ancestors, so harming one, even accidentally at the wheel, is not a small thing. One piece of advice a visitor would never guess: in traditional belief even pointing at a chameleon is a bad omen, and the misfortune is held to fall on the person and their family rather than on the animal. Admire it, keep your hand down, and let your driver decide what happens next. Fady varies from region to region and sometimes from village to village, which is another reason to travel with somebody who knows which one he is in.
