Ambanja → Antalaha transfer

Ambanja to Antalaha is 483 km coast to coast — from the cocoa valley on the west side to the vanilla capital on the east. It is one of the few journeys that crosses the whole northern tip rather than running along it.

Cocoa to vanilla

Ambanja sits on the Sambirano river and is the cocoa capital of Madagascar. Around sixty per cent of its people farm — cacao first, then vanilla, ylang-ylang, coffee, pepper and rice — and the Millot plantation, one of the largest cacao estates in the country, receives visitors.

Antalaha, at the other end, is the historic capital of the world vanilla trade, with French colonial architecture, a harbour and a court. Between them the road passes through Ambilobe's sugar country and the SAVA vanilla towns.

Two of the crops that Madagascar is known for worldwide sit at either end of this drive, and the road between them is the reason either can be exported.

The roads, and the year they changed

The RN6 from Ambanja to Ambilobe, about 100 km, is inside the Colas rehabilitation funded by the European Union and the European Investment Bank — 96 per cent complete as of January 2026. Two river crossings on it, at Ifasy and at the edge of Ambilobe, lost their bridges to Cyclone Gamane in March 2024 and are crossed on fords today.

Then the RN5a east: 152 km to Vohemar, the notorious stretch rebuilt and inaugurated in September 2022, followed by 150 km down to Sambava and a final 81 km to Antalaha on some of the best asphalt on the island.

The honest summary is that this entire corridor was, until four years ago, a serious expedition. It is now a long drive.

Time, and why it is usually two days

Documented sector times add to roughly eight to ten hours of driving. With sunset between 17:30 and 18:30 and no night driving between towns, that makes this a two-day journey for most travellers, breaking at Vohemar or Sambava.

We plan it that way by default and tell you if your dates allow otherwise.

The wet season is the real question

Between December and April the two RN6 fords are the variable. In December 2025 both went under water, traffic stopped in both directions and the authorities forbade any attempt to cross. The notice reopening the Mahavavy ford in July 2026 was candid about its own limits: passable for all vehicles until the arrival of the next rainy season.

None of that makes the journey impossible in the rains. It makes it conditional, and conditional journeys need someone local checking the crossings the day before rather than a traveller discovering them mid-river.

Price per person

Zebu on the road are part of driving here. Herds cross the national roads and rest on the warm tarmac, and after dark they are genuinely hard to see even on full beam — which is one reason we do not drive between towns at night. A zebu is worth around 400,000 to 500,000 Ariary, more than a month's wages for most people in this region, so an animal on the road is somebody's livelihood rather than an obstacle. Knowing which stretches carry herds, and at what hour, is exactly the kind of thing a driver who runs these roads every month knows and a rented car does not come with.

Chameleons cross these roads, slowly and without looking, and your driver will stop for them. In much of northern Madagascar it is fady — taboo — to kill or even touch one, and that belief is the reason the big Oustalet's chameleon is still common here when it has thinned out elsewhere. In many villages they are held to carry the spirits of the ancestors, so harming one, even accidentally at the wheel, is not a small thing. One piece of advice a visitor would never guess: in traditional belief even pointing at a chameleon is a bad omen, and the misfortune is held to fall on the person and their family rather than on the animal. Admire it, keep your hand down, and let your driver decide what happens next. Fady varies from region to region and sometimes from village to village, which is another reason to travel with somebody who knows which one he is in.
